Taylor was so mad at herself, and the situation, that she couldnât stand outside and watch when the helicopter whisked Roman away. Instead she stood in the kitchen and only allowed herself to wait until they safely cleared the trees. Sheâd endured this many timesâthe moment when a man left. They all walked away from her at some point. It shouldnât sting so much. She should be used to it. On some level she was, but that didnât make it any easier to endure. It didnât mean she was any less likely to take the whole thing personally. Needing distance and a bit of numbing, she left the window and her view of the backyard, grabbed the first bottle of red wine she could find, poured herself a glass and wandered into the study.
Why did I have to go and have sex with Roman? she asked herself as she curled up in one of the chairs. Of course things had devolved into a mess of misunderstandings. That was what always happened to her. And then she was stuck feeling the way she felt right nowâlost and foolish. Just like she had after every job or career failure. Virtual assistant. Massage therapist. Fashion buyer. Just like she had every time some guy broke her heart. Ian. Malik. Bradley. Those lists went on and on, but theyâd always been separate before today. Now her failings in her personal life had negatively impacted her career prospects. Great job, Taylor.
Sheâd known all along that it was a bad idea to let romance and business intermingle, although one could argue that what sheâd enjoyed with Roman was not romance, but instead merely a case of lust unleashed. Yes, there had been moments when sheâd felt more than that, but that was her tendency, to get caught up in it all. To get swept away by a man. Any ooey-gooey feelings sheâd had were surely one-sided. Roman was a man with the world at his feet. Heâd even lost his patience with her when theyâd talked about her project, too frustrated by her inability to rise to his level. He was in a different league. And the sooner she resigned herself to that fact, the better.
The one thing she couldnât stop thinking about was the fact that heâd been married. Married. How had she missed that when sheâd done her research? She wondered what his wife had been like. And what their relationship was like. Was she the love of his life? Were they unbelievably happy together? Was that the reason he was known for being so closed off? She imagined a relationship that was pretty close to perfect, just like Roman. Something so idyllic that he couldnât bring himself to talk about it. If Taylor had been in the same situation, hopelessly in love then losing that person after two weeks or marriage? She wasnât sure sheâd be able to pick herself up off the floor ever again.
âStop thinking about him. Youâre tormenting yourself,â she muttered.
